If you've been hearing more about HYROX lately, you're not alone.
The sport has exploded in popularity over the last few years and more everyday people, not just elite athletes are signing up to see what they're capable of.
But what exactly is HYROX, and how do you know if it's something you should try?
As a HYROX coach, I get this question all the time.
What is HYROX?
HYROX is a global fitness race that combines running and functional strength workouts. Every race follows the exact same format, which means you can compare your results with athletes all over the world.
The race consists of:
• 8 x 1 km runs
• 8 workout stations between each run
The workout stations include movements like:
• Sled push
• Sled pull
• Burpee broad jumps
• Rowing
• Farmer carries
• Sandbag lunges
• Wall balls
What makes HYROX unique is that it isn’t random. The structure is always the same, which means you can train specifically for it and see real progress.
It’s basically fitness racing.
Do you need to be an elite athlete?
Absolutely not.
One of the biggest misconceptions is that HYROX is only for high-level athletes. In reality, most participants are regular people who just wanted a challenge.
There are different divisions based on experience level, including:
• Open (most popular)
• Doubles
• Relay teams
• Pro divisions
Many people doing their first race are simply trying to finish.
And honestly, that’s what I love most about it.
Why HYROX is attracting so many everyday people
HYROX gives people something many traditional fitness programs don’t:
A clear goal.
Instead of just working out to "stay in shape," you’re training with purpose.
Your workouts start to feel like preparation instead of just exercise.
I often see people become more consistent simply because they now have something meaningful to work toward.
The real reason people should consider HYROX
Yes, you’ll get fitter. Yes, you’ll get stronger. Yes, your endurance will improve.
But what most people don’t expect is what happens mentally.
HYROX has a way of showing people they are capable of more than they thought.
I see it all the time, people who didn’t consider themselves runners completing all 8 runs. People who thought they weren't strong pushing sleds they never imagined they could move.
Confidence grows when you prove to yourself you can do hard things.
My personal reason for loving HYROX
What makes HYROX especially meaningful to me is that I wasn’t the "athletic kid" growing up.
I wasn’t the fastest. I wasn’t the strongest.
I definitely wasn't the one people expected to end up coaching athletes.
Which is exactly why I believe so strongly in this type of training.
Because HYROX rewards consistency, smart training, and resilience more than natural talent.
It shows people what happens when they just don't quit.
Who HYROX is perfect for
HYROX might be a great fit if you:
• Like having a goal to train toward
• Enjoy structured training
• Want to build both strength and endurance
• Want to challenge yourself mentally
• Are looking for something beyond typical gym workouts
• Want to see what you're capable of
You do not need to be:
• The fastest runner
• The strongest person
• An experienced competitor
You just need to be willing to try.
Should you try HYROX?
If you're curious, that's usually your answer.
You don't need to be "ready." Most people start training because they signed up, not the other way around.
The best approach is usually:
Start where you are. Train consistently.Improve along the way.
That’s exactly how confidence is built.
Final thoughts
HYROX isn't really about the race itself.
It's about the process of becoming someone who can finish it.
The real transformation happens in the training... the early mornings... the hard workouts... the days you didn't feel like showing up but did anyway.
The race is just the celebration of the work you put in.
And whether someone finishes at the front, the middle, or the back, the finish line means the same thing: You did something hard. You showed up. You proved something to yourself. And that's always worth it.
HYROX FAQ
Can beginners do HYROX?
Yes. Many participants are doing their first race simply to challenge themselves and experience the event. There are divisions designed for beginners and first-timers.
How long does HYROX take to complete?
Most first-time athletes finish between 1.5 to 2.5 hours depending on fitness level and pacing strategy.
How do you start training for HYROX?
Start by building a base of running, strength training, and functional conditioning. A structured program helps balance these areas and reduce injury risk.
Do you need special equipment to train?
